Get
Involved
ISSI
is a rural-based grassroots
organization. We offer several
possibilities to get involved as our
work revolves around many developmental
issues. This is a great opportunity for
individuals looking for first hand
experience working at a small
organization deeply rooted in its local
community.
We are looking for
well-qualified volunteers and interns
from India and abroad with preferably some
prior experience working with other
non-profits or NGOs. Instructions on how
to apply to one of the following
positions are available at the
bottom of
this page.
ISSI typically takes 2 long-term and 4
short-term volunteers per year so
applications should be received no less
than one month ahead of the earliest
requested day of arrival.

1. Online volunteers to research donors:
ISSI needs online volunteers to research potential donors who might
be interested in funding our
proposed
projects around the issues of children, reproductive
health, hygiene, and rehabilitation.
2. On-campus volunteers to work on our ongoing projects:
We welcome volunteers from India and abroad to participate in our
child care, environmental education,
safe motherhood education and
socio-economic research/study projects.
3. Internships for students from India and abroad:
We invite students from India and abroad for internship in the
following fields: women and child care,
environment, peace and human rights,
local governance, capacity building and
NGO network promotion…etc.
4. SPECIAL POSITION AVAILABLE: Long-term
Tsunami Volunteer
ISSI is currently seeking a long-term
volunteer to help with the
implementation of ISSI’s long-term
tsunami projects. The volunteer should
be willing to stay no less than 1 year.
The volunteer would spend about 50% of
the time at the headquarters in
Pudukottai doing Internet research on
funding, documentation of all tsunami
project records, grant writing, and
other tsunami project related tasks. The
other 50% of the time, the volunteer
would be at our tsunami project office
helping with the direct implementation
of our projects. The volunteer would
also have the opportunity to
self-initiate a project for tsunami
affected people (e. g., hold an ISSI
recreation day for tsunami-affected
children in an affected village).
Skills necessary for this position
include proficiency of English language,
being comfortable to travel via ground
transportation, cross-cultural
communication skills, and general
computer skills. Other valuable skills
for this position include familiarity
with NGO project implementation, grant
and project proposal writing, surveying,
and data collection.
More
details for prospective volunteers and
interns:
We expect volunteers to commit to work
at least 2 months and up to 1 year at
ISSI. We will arrange
for food and accommodation at our home
for all new team members. You will live
with ISSI's Managing Trustee, Mr. R.
Ramaswamy, and his family, which makes
for a personal cultural experience. The
home and office have bedrooms, bathing
and toilet facilities, electricity, and
water from wells. We also maintain a
small organic garden in the front of our
home and have meals in a common dining
area. We prepare and serve traditional
vegetarian South Indian foods, 3 times a
day. Special dietary needs or requests
can be met.
Internet centers are available in
Pudukottai town, which is about 5 kms
(~3 miles) from ISSI’s office. Web
access is also available on campus.
Private pay phone centers for long
distance are available very close to the
campus; within two minutes walking
distance on the main road.
We ask that a new team member make a
financial contribution for their food
and accommodation as well as our ongoing
projects. The recommended contribution
is $3-4 US dollars per day. Concession
to students or deserving candidates can
be made by request.
ISSI will meet local transportation
expenditure for the volunteers. You are
responsible for all other expenses.
